First Meeting of the New Year

Happy New Year everyone and welcome back.  Please join us next Tuesday, January 14th at 6:30 in the library for our monthly general meeting. We will be reviewing and voting on some of the spending committee’s recommendations and we would love to have as many people help us in making those decisions as possible.
We will also be discussing the upcoming board turnover. We are missing quite a few key positions for the 2014-2015 term and we could really use your help.
We look forward to seeing you there.

Calling All Parents! Campus Beautification Helpers Needed!

The PTA has plans to install 6 square tables in the courtyard outside the portable classrooms at the back of the school. These tables were purchased with PTA funds and will be used for small group activities.

Before the School District staff installs the tables, we need to spruce up the portable area. Due to malfunctioning irrigation and lack of rain, most of the shrubs have died and/or are dying and the trees need to be pruned. We also would like to install a hard-scape pathway (pavers), but this project can be done at a later date.
We are hoping to use parent volunteers or donations by local landscaping businesses to remove the shrubs and their roots and to prune the trees in the portable courtyard.
Can you help? Is your family in the landscaping business? Do you have connections with a local arborist or landscaping business?
If you would like to get involved with this project, please contact Kathy Doig :
skdoig@sonic.net or 707-545-7691.
Additional campus beautification projects needing parent volunteers:
Re-building the wall ball backstop on the blacktop and re-building one raised bed by the portable area. If you have carpentry skills and/or connections with a wood supplier, please contact Kathy Doig or Mr. Mayer. Thank you!

Walk and Roll

IWTS-Logo_sr2s-natl-partner

Safe Routes to School/Walk and Roll Wednesdays did a walk through the neighborhood on November 4 with Principal Mayer, police, city engineers, an independent engineering company and a representative from the Department of Health. Our school was one of 10 in the county to be included in a grant that allowed the analysis to happen. 4 parents from the school shared their concerns over traffic trouble spots that make it difficult for children to feel safe. No definite plans were made, but concerns were noted. We may see some changes in the new year. Thanks to Jeff Kamariotis, Tiah-Marie Foley, and John Moe for making the time to work on this. – Connie Sultana

General Meeting and Santa Rosa Middle School Presentation

Santa Rosa Middle School presentation at PTA Meeting * November 12th at 6:00pm

Kathy Coker, Principal of Santa Rosa Middle School, will be visiting Proctor Terrace to meet with parents at the PTA meeting on the evening of November 12 at 6:00 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room. She will be bringing a team of teachers, parents, and students to present information about the outstanding programs at Santa Rosa Middle School. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to talk with Ms. Coker and the Middle School team in a small, intimate setting to find out all about the great programs and student opportunities at Santa Rosa Middle School. Please come and take advantage of this excellent opportunity. Parents of sixth grade students will find this presentation especially interesting since their children will be entering middle school next year. Sixth grade students are welcome and encouraged to attend this presentation with their parents.

This is our biggest meeting of the year. We used to hold it in the Library but we quickly outgrew it. It’s not just 6th Graders and their parents. Everyone ends up coming… K-6th! 6th Graders (and all the kids) sit in front so they can ask all their questions. And, their questions are always GREAT! You’ll meet your Counselor’s per your last name and a lot of great teachers and administrators. And, PT Alumni to boot always sit on the stage and answer questions as well.

SRMS will come back in February during school for the 6th graders to get their paperwork to bring home. They’ll be able to choose their electives, as well.

This is a great time to ask about school hours, school sports teams, clubs, zero period, regular and p.e. lockers, spirit days, electives, p.e. clothes, 7th and 8th grade field trips, dress code, and beyond.

You can leave after the presentation. You’re not required to stay for the entire meeting. Otherwise the General meeting will start at 6:30.  Lots of important topics will be discussed.

Spending Commitee

At the past few general PTA meetings, we have discussed setting up a spending committee. I have agreed to be the chairperson this year. The committee will meet to discuss any unallocated funds that the PTA has in the bank that are not needed for the current year’s budget and to discuss ideas on how to to spend it. This committee came about after Kathy Doig presented the idea of ordering new outdoor tables for the classes in the portables to use. As a board, we thought it would be wonderful to have a group of parents get together to discuss ideas that would make Proctor Terrace even better than it already is. The committee is open to any and all. Please contact me directly if you would like to be involved and I will be setting our first meeting time soon. If you are unable to fully commit due to time constraints and you have ideas, please feel free to email me at kkiessigphoto@gmail.com to pass on ideas at our future meetings.
Thanks,
Kristina Kiessig

WALKATHON

Walkathon Logo 2013

We hope your student and family had fun participating in our Walk-a-thon last Friday, September 27th.The weather was perfect and we had so many wonderful parent volunteers. Thank you to everyone who pitched in to make it such a special day.

Big Thank You’s to the Elsie Allen High School Drum Line, whose precision and music mesmerized us all and to Matthew Seghezzi from Dansations DJ + Event Services for keeping our kids pumped up with great tunes for the 3rd year in a row.

Did your child enjoy peeking his / her head in the special wood cut out featuring a boy and girl “walking across America?” It was lovingly created and painted by Valerie Martin, Mom to Jack Lazark in Mrs. Cartan’s class. Thank you Valerie!

There were so many kids running, in addition to walking! It seemed they were all excited to earn their rubber bracelets and sports necklaces. We handed out 393 blue bracelets (10 laps), 247 white ones (25 laps), and 45 red ones (50 laps). 18 students walked 75 laps or more — that is a Proctor Terrace record and that mileage is equivalent to a Half Marathon!

When students checked out, they received a Yogurt Farms free frozen yogurt coupon. Please enjoy this treat generously donated by Todd Phillips, Yogurt Farms owner, before October 28th (expiration date).

Students can now turn in their pledge money. The deadline to submit money to be considered for prizes is Friday, October 11th. Money can be turned in after October 11th, however it will not be applied to student prize categories. If your child did not participate in the Walk-a-thon, please consider a flat donation. This event is the PTA’s main fundraiser of the year! Online donations can be made on the school website via Paypal. Checks should be made out to Proctor Terrace PTA.

Any student who turns in $10 or more will be entered to win an ipod Nano generously donated by 3rd grade teacher, Nancy Cartan. The winner will be drawn and all awards announced at the Awards Assembly on Friday, October 18th. Awards Categories include Top Walkers, Top Earners: Individual and Classroom.

Also, if we raise $35,000 or more, Mr. Mayer will do a tricycle race after the Awards Assembly.

To print additional pledge sheets, please go to our school website and click Walk-a-thon: www.proctorterracepta.org

PTA Weekly Update – September 12th

We had a great turnout at our first PTA meeting on Tuesday night! A lot of ground was covered but we wanted to share a few highlights.

Santa Rosa City Schools will be holding 8 meetings to form a strategic plan to help define our children’s future and the board wants to hear from you. Go to http://www.srcs.k12.ca.us/Pages/Home.aspx and click on Strategic Planning to learn more about how education is changing and see a calendar of upcoming meetings. Mr. Mayer strongly encourages parents to get involved, now is your chance to be heard. Some of the locations may be changing to make them more convenient to all citizens of Santa Rosa.

Odyssey of the Mind will hold their first meeting on September 17th at 6:30 in Ms. Schmidt’s room, they are looking for coaches to assist with this amazing program so go check it out.

Get ready for some fresh air! The first Walk & Roll to School is on Wednesday September 18th, see you on the sidewalk.

The Walkaton is upon us, be sure Friday the 27th is circled on your calendar. Go to http://proctorterracepta.org/ and click on Walkathon for more information including how to volunteer, it’s a big event and we’d love to have your help.

Don’t forget to sign up as a PTA member before September 30th, your child’s class could earn an extra $50 curriculum enrichment!

The PTA will be giving each student a Tiger Tog with our brand new logo but still need a Tiger Tog coordinator to help place quarterly orders, go Tigers!

There is a tremendous need for yard duty from 11:55-12:30, contact the district if interested in this paid position.

Thanks to your dedicated fundraising and wonderful donations the PTA has money to spend and we need your ideas, please contact Kristina Kiessig to get involved with our Spending Committee.

The results from our survey last spring told us you’d like to attend a PTA meeting in the morning, so guess what?… our next General Membership Meeting will be held at 8:30 AM in the multipurpose room on Tuesday October 8th, bring your coffee and get involved!

Next Week’s Upcoming Events:

September 17th: Odyssey of the Mind Meeting at 6:30pm in the MPR. More information at http://proctorterracepta.org/enrichment-opportunities/odyssey-of-the-mind

The classes with the most walk and rollers win an award each week called The Golden Sneaker. Occasionally we have special Walk and Roll days on which each child who participates wins a special prize. Our first official Walk and Roll Day is Wednesday September 18th! Mark your calendar for the special International Walk and Roll Day, October 9th!
